Join a panel of Ohio State scholars this discussion of issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality within and outside the U.S. comic book industry. The panel is inspired by the recent book Multicultural Comics: From Zap to Blue Beetle, edited by Frederick Luis Aldama, Arts and Humanities Distinguished Professor of English at Ohio State. In addition to Aldama, the panel also features Jared Gardner, associate Professor of English and film and director of the Popular Culture Studies program at Ohio State and author of Projections: Comics and the History of 21st Century Storytelling (due this fall), and Rebecca Wanzo, associate professor of women’s studies and English at Ohio State, who contributed the essay "Black Nationalism, Bunraku, and Beyond: Articulating Black Heroism through Cultural Fusion and Comics" to Multicultural Comics. The panel will be moderated by David Filipi, director of film/video at the Wexner Center and co-curator of the Wex's 2008 exhibition Jeff Smith: Bone & Beyond. Cosponsored by Ohio State's Latino and Latin American Studies Space for Enrichment and Research (L.A.S.E.R.), Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, Humanities Institute, and Popular Culture Studies.
