Join us as acclaimed artist Stan Douglas speaks about his practice and career. Through film, photography, and installation, Douglas skillfully repurposes elements from the past to shed light on contemporary issues and the way we recall historical events. For example, in Hors-champs (“off-camera” in French), a highlight of our fall exhibition Blues for Smoke, Douglas uses the setting of a late 1960s televised jazz performance to consider the relationship between the turbulence of that period and the moment of the work’s creation, 1992, the year of the LA riots. Douglas’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions at major institutions around the world, and in 2012 he received the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography, New York. He lives and works in his native Vancouver, Canada.
