Wendy Ewald

Writer, photographer, and teacher Wendy Ewald visits to talk about her artistic practice and recent projects. Dedicated to social change and children's issues, Ewald has worked for more than 25 years with children and young people around the world. Taking a collaborative approach to teaching, she encourages her students to create their own images, providing them with the tools and skills to document their own lives.

For her book American Alphabets, published this year, she worked with students from cities as varied as Cleveland and Queens to photograph objects that they felt represented the cultural and linguistic "alphabets" of their lives.

Ewald has worked in many parts of the United States, as well as in Mexico, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The recipient of numerous awards including a MacArthur Fellowship and National Endowment for the Arts grants, she has published other books including Portraits and Dreams and Magic Eyes. Ewald is currently teaching at Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies.
