Black, Queer & Intersectional Collective was founded in 2017 to fill a gap that existed in Columbus's activism community between black organizers and existing LGBTQ+ organizations. The grassroots coalition of queer, trans, and intersex African Americans works toward a society in which its constituency can thrive regardless of gender or socioeconomic status, focusing efforts on activism, organizing and providing opportunities for the black LGBTQ+ community to come together.
With the threat of coronavirus still hovering over in-person events, BQIC is currently maintaining a schedule of virtual gatherings, including two happening tonight.
At 7 PM tonight and the second Tuesday of every month, Black Power Book Club gathers on Zoom. This week, the group is wrapping up we'll be reading the last two chapters of Playing the Whore by Melissa Gira Grant and deciding on the next read, so it's a good night to chime in.
At 8 PM on second Tuesdays, local writers and performers take the virtual stage for Speak Up! & Virtual Open Mic. The event is also a monthly fundraiser to support the organization's emergency fund.
