If you've been to a Wex exhibition opening, you're familiar with the spinning skills of DJ Citizen Dorian S, aka patron services staffer Dorian S. Ham. While we can't share details at this time on when our next opening will be, you can enjoy a selection of music he's curated right now, along with a barrage of unexpected images, through the series In the Time of Coronavirus.
As Ham explains, "As more and more DJs are going live taking on the Information Superhighway during this, the 'Funless Season,' I had to figure out a way to present the mix in a visually interesting way."
For part one, Crusoe: Love in the Time of Coronavirus, he combines tracks from an epically diverse mix of artists—from Minutemen and The Police to Kanye West and Babyface—with a mashup of 1950s instructional videos and commercials. "It's a shotgun marriage full of weird and nonsensical juxtapositions," Ham notes. "If any of it syncs it's a miracle, not intention."
Part two, Gambol: Escape in the Time of Coronavirus, includes artists such as Lizzo, Pink, Kraftwerk, George Clinton, and Megan Thee Stallion synched to moments from classic Hollywood musicals, the vintage dance show American Bandstand, and an episode of the '80s music showcase Solid Gold on video that's so degraded, it almost looks like the dancers' blurred faces are covered by masks.
If you like what you hear and see, Ham is accepting donations via CashApp ($DorianSHam) and Venmo (Dorian-Ham).
