Makayla Davis, Public and University Programs intern, spoke to two students interning with the Wex for 2020–21: Sherry Xiao and Jack Degenhart (pictured L to R above). Here are their perspectives on what it’s like to work remotely at our campus-centered contemporary art institution amid a global pandemic. Each has shared a favorite self-taken photo to go with their Q&A.

Davis, now in her second year as Public and University Programs Intern, is a fourth-year Ohio State undergraduate student from Lorain, Ohio. She studies landscape architecture and holds a minor in African-American and African Studies. She is involved on campus as an ambassador for the Knowlton School of Architecture, the president of the school’s service organization, SERVitecture, and she is a Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship recipient. Makayla is incredibly passionate about placefinding and has studied abroad in London, Rome, and Peru during her academic experience. In her spare time, she finds passion in the art of 35mm photography and dancing with friends.

What is your hometown?

I’m from Dayton, Ohio... I lived in a smaller town right outside [Dayton] called Oakwood.

What’s your favorite thing about Columbus?

The activity that goes on. Even though it’s not a giant metropolis, it’s definitely bigger than Dayton… When I first got here, I was kind of intimidated and a little shocked at everything, but as soon as I [found] my way around, I really enjoyed exploring.

What is the most spectacular place that you have ever visited?

Last summer, I studied abroad. I went to Italy with the History of Art Department... And one of my last days in Florence, [a friend and I] took [a] bus all the way up this hill out of the city to this little town called Fiesole. [There] were these ruins that we found, and we just explored and found this little monastery on a hill. And it was a very stereotypical study abroad experience, but it was everything… That whole day was so fun.

Did you pick up any hobbies during quarantine?

Before quarantine, I definitely would not have considered myself a reader, but… I read [and] that’s pretty big for me... Other than that, I continually have been writing. I write a lot of poetry. Although nothing really happened over quarantine, I was still able to just write down some random things I was thinking of, and that definitely helped me pass the time.

What connects you to the arts at the Wex?

What comes to mind immediately is the exhibits. I’m very much a visual arts person. Although most of my classes up to this semester have been ancient art -- like learning the history of art -- this semester, I’m taking two contemporary art classes (Performance and the Politics of Space with Visiting Associate Professor Tim Griffin and Envisioning the Nation: Modern & Contemporary Art in Asia with Associate Professor Namiko Kunimoto). So I’m definitely getting a grasp of contemporary art because I previously had never learned about it in a class. So it’s actually really nice that I'm in this internship and also learning about it… Contemporary art was something I [never] really thought I would be interested in. But I just never was in the environment where I could learn and reflect. I’m actually really interested in it now…The exhibits are definitely my favorite.

What’s your favorite photo that you’ve ever taken?

I took [the photo above] when I was in Italy. When we went on a little hike, Professor Whittington had been there [before], so he knew little backroads up the hill. And you can see the Duomo!

What’s your hometown?

It’s a city called Kunming in the southern part of China. It’s called Spring City because we don’t get snow; summer’s not very hot. I miss it. I miss it like crazy.

What’s your favorite thing about Columbus?

The Short North; I just love walking there, and there are a lot of stores and art.

Did you pick up any hobbies during quarantine?

I do drawings and paintings all the time. So I’ve been continuing to do that during quarantine... And playing with my cat. I could spend my whole day with him.

What made you want to intern at the Wex?

During my sophomore year, one of [my] design classes (Materials and Processes for Visual Communication with Oscar Fernández) had a lot of field trips, and the Wexner Center was one of the places that we visited... I love art and I always felt like this is such a cool place... so I [felt] very attached to this place. Last year, one of my friends, Lily, asked me if I wanted to work at the Wexner Center. And I was like “YES PLEASE.” And that’s how I ended up here!

What are your responsibilities?

We make posters and cards for every event... We work on image production for the website... A lot of posters and postcards and sometimes some video editing... But during quarantine... I’ve been working on videos for the whole summer, and I’ve been working on the Pages book. [Also] a lot of social media posts this summer.

What’s your favorite photo you have ever taken?

[The picture above is from] a photography project I did in my freshman year (Photography 1 with Michelle Marie Burdine). This is the final project. I basically took all the photos that I took before and took them to the same place and held them up [to] take the photo again… I love this series because it reminds me of how fast time went by and how much I’ve learned and accomplished.
