Update: Tuesday, March 24 at 9 PM EST, you can watch a Q&A with director Kleber Mendonça Filho on Facebook Live via Indie Memphis.

When Kino Lorber approached us about partnering on their virtual screening room initiative—a clever and exciting way to share current theatrical releases amid the spate of cinema closures during the coronavirus pandemic—we couldn’t pass up the chance. We’ve worked with the creative and hardworking team at Kino for decades and to join them on this was a no-brainer.

We’re especially pleased that it’s for the extraordinary Brazilian film Bacurau from filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho. One of the world’s most vital filmmakers, Mendonça Filho is no stranger to the Wex having visited twice over the last decade to screen his films Neighboring Sounds and Aquarius. His work is politically charged and astute. It draws compellingly from the traditions of entertaining and rabble-rousing genre cinema, and the dystopian sci-fi western Bacurau is no exception.

"An exhilarating fusion of high and low, [Bacurau] takes a shopworn premise—townsfolk facing a violent threat—and bats it around until it all goes ka-boom."

If you want to be part of this exciting new distribution experiment, all while supporting the Wex (part of your purchase will benefit the center) AND seeing one of the year’s best films, head over to Kino to watch. The support for this will help us remain a vibrant center for cinema once this turbulent moment is behind us.

And with that: buy your virtual ticket and on with the feature presentation!
