Read, Watch, Listen The year in Film/Video July 9, 2021, was a notable day for the center and our film department in particular as we welcomed a live audience back to our film theater for the first time since March 2020. We didn’t know what to expect; we were apprehensive but ultimately heartened when a couple of dozen people turned out to see Lynn Hershman Leeson’s Conceiving Ada (1997) over the course of two screenings. People were excited to be back in a cinema, seeing a film on the big screen, and they were eager to let us know.
Read, Watch, Listen Think Ahead: Film/Video We're excited to share more great, unique-to-the-region programming in 2023, with January alone bringing events like the film series Resting Places, the continuation of our collaboration with Art Possible Ohio, the Ohio premiere of Ontroerend Goed's Are we not drawn onward to new erA in partnership with CAPA, and the local synth showcase Patchmakers. For a head start on what's coming, we're devoting the first week of January to recommendations from our curatorial team, intended to help you get better acquainted with some of the artists and programs on tap—or get you caught up on what the artists have been working on recently. First up: Film/Video Director David Filipi and Associate Curator Chris Stults with relevant works by artists visiting in February and March.
Event DigiEYE: Film/Video Showcase Free for all audiences (No tickets or registration required) We’re excited to join with Ohio State’s Department of Theatre to present DigiEYE, an evening of new visual digital media works by undergraduate and graduate students from Theatre, Art and ACCAD. The screening of narrative, documentary, and experimental shorts will be followed by a brief Q&A session with the works’ creators of the work. Event Hanif Abdurraqib and Clark Kellogg Breaking Down "The Last Dance" Moderated by Director of Film/Video David Filipi Tune into wexarts.org for a timely appraisal of ESPN's documentary series The Last Dance with essayist, critic, and poet Hanif Abdurraqib and CBS basketball analyst, former NBA player, and Ohio State grad Clark Kellogg. The Last Dance is a cable phenomenon and the subject of intense scrutiny in any corner where sports are discussed. Originally launching in April 2020 and concluding May 17, the 10-part Netflix series examines the Chicago Bulls' 1997–98 season, during which Michael Jordan played his last game for the team—but it also tackles much more. A deep dive into Jordan's playing career, his seismic impact on pop culture, and the interplay between sports and marketing, The Last Dance is an incisive, absorbing look at a transformative moment in sports history.
Read, Watch, Listen Year-end progress report: Film/Video Studio Archive project For our last post of the year, the second in a series of occasional updates about the Film Video Studio’s Archive Project from archivist Mike Olenick. You can read the first entry here. In 2017, the Wexner Center received a $150,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to develop an archive of the numerous works made with the support of our Film/Video Studio. Often called the Wex’s “best kept secret,” the Studio is a residency program for artists and filmmakers working in film and video.

Read, Watch, Listen Scratching the surface: 2018 Film/Video Program at a Glance August marks the return of students and faculty to The Ohio State University campus and there is a palpable sense of anticipation with the new school year as we all put the sleepier summer months behind us. As late summer turns to fall, the Wexner Center for the Arts and our fellow cultural institutions across the city roll out their respective seasons of events that represent months, even years in some cases, of planning.

The popular showcase provides Ohio’s independent media artists a chance to show their work in a theatrical setting before an audience. Last year’s crowd witnessed 18 short works by artists from across the state. Deadline for entries is Friday, March 27. The Showcase is Saturday, May 9 at 7 pm at the Wexner Center.

Press Release Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video series for summer 2019 Vintage B-movies and classic blockbusters offer a refreshing break in a season of remakes and sequels Sick of sequels? Had enough of superheroes? The Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University provides a respite from the usual summer movie fare with a roster of local exclusives that includes visiting filmmaker appearances, a program of two series spotlighting vintage films made outside the Hollywood system, and, to launch the summer season, the return of Wex Drive-In to the Wexner Center Plaza—with new attractions and pre-show activities.
Press Release Wexner Center for the Arts Introduces Food and Drink for Film/Video Screenings Gourmet popcorn to roll out with beer and wine sales through a partnership with the Heirloom Café Starting June 2, the Wexner Center for the Arts will collaborate with Heirloom Café, the independently-owned restaurant located in the center’s lower lobby, to offer concession items for guests before Film/Video screenings scheduled on Thursdays and Fridays.
