The fall series also includes films and conversations with Penelope Spheeris, who will introduce her iconic documentary The Decline of Western Civilization; the Columbus debut of the Sundance Film Festival favorite How to Dance in Ohio, with director Alexandra Shiva and producer Bari Pearlman; and more.

For Sundance, Heather sat down for a short video interview about how she first became interested in documenting Kusama's life and work.
Press Release Academy Award-Winning Filmmaker Milos Forman to Visit Wexner Center In April as Part of Monthlong Retrospective "I discovered very soon that you can speak different languages and have different customs, but human nature is the same everywhere."—Milos Forman This April, the Wexner Center presents a monthlong, seven-film retrospective of the work of two-time Academy Award winning director Milos Forman. Forman will visit on April 4 to introduce Taking Off, his first American film. This series will include work made in his native Czechoslovakia and his work in America (including such classics as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Amadeus).

We know from up-close experience how much talent, drive, and dedication each brings to their work. Aside from hosting them in Columbus and experiencing their work, there's nothing we enjoy more than seeing them recognized by the industry and their peers. It's been an especially good week for that.

Event City Hall (Frederick Wiseman, 2020) Followed by a conversation with the filmmaker and Mayor Martin Walsh Catch the Columbus premiere of City Hall, the latest project by legendary documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman. The film captures the efforts of Boston city government to provide essential public services while revealing the ways its policies address racial justice, affordable housing, climate action, and more. Although city government touches almost every aspect of our daily lives—taking care of sanitation and safety—it can be easy to take for granted the many activities necessary to support a local population: veterans affairs; parks and recreation maintenance; record keeping of birth, marriage, and death.

Press Release Experimental Filmmaker Phil Solomon to Introduce Series of Grand Theft Auto Films Installation Also on View for One Week Kicking off three evenings of screenings, experimental filmmaker Phil Solomon will visit the Wexner Center for the Arts on Wednesday, October 1 to discuss and present his latest work, including a trilogy of digital videos created with the video game Grand Theft Auto IV. In addition, Solomon’s installation pieces “EMPIRE” and American Falls will be on view in the Wexner Center’s Performance Space September 26–October 1.
Event First Cow (Kelly Reichardt, 2019) Introduced by Vera Brunner-Sung, filmmaker and Ohio State associate professor With the gorgeously shot First Cow, Artist Residency Award recipient Kelly Reichardt trains her patient eye on male connection in the hardscrabble, early 19th-century Pacific Northwest. A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has traveled west with a group of fur trappers to a fort in Oregon territory. Set apart from the loud and aggressive men, he finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune. Soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although its future relies on the clandestine participation of a nearby landowner’s prized milking cow. From this simple premise, Reichardt constructs an interrogation of foundational Americana with a sensitive depiction of male friendship and a mounting sense of suspense.

Event Bunker (Jenny Perlin, 2022)Jenny Perlin in personQ&A follows Filmmaker Jenny Perlin visits for the Ohio premiere of Bunker, a fascinating documentary about men living in decommissioned nuclear silos and underground bunkers across the Midwest. Produced with support from the Wexner Center’s Film/Video Studio, Bunker follows American men who are increasingly deciding to live in solitary hideouts as fears of societal collapse have created a market for doomsday “preppers.” Independent filmmaker Jenny Perlin travels alone to meet some of these men, as well as the builders and salesmen who cater to them, examining American myths surrounding individualism, masculinity, and security in a time when climate, economic, and political crises abound.
