Artist Matt Meindl on Ohio Shorts

Columbus-based artist Matt Meindl's experimental films, mostly shot on Super 8, have garnered a loyal following here at the Wexner. For the past 4 years, we've screened his delightfully quirky films that all share in common a unique handmade aesthetic. I have to admit, I look forward to his Ohio Shorts submissions every year and so I asked for his thoughts on the program.

Just mailed my entry for the upcoming Ohio Shorts Showcase at the Wexner Center. I try to submit new work to the show every year because I feel like screening a movie at the Wex is the best of both worlds for Ohio filmers -- it's local + accessible yet it's also a respected contemporary art institution. The annual showcase provides an opportunity to see your movie on a big ol' screen and view a cross-section of other independent film/video work being created throughout the state. Thankfully the Wex showcase is by nature inclusive; it tosses together narrative, documentary and experimental shorts along with other emerging hybridized genres. I certainly don't like every film I see there (and neither will you, most likely) but each year I see films that stick with me . . . even haunt me, in the good way. And sometimes the creepy way. Some of my friends and I still quote lines from Dan Olsen's hilarious "Homeslice" which screened back in 2007. And I remember last year's show featured an oddly-engaging 35mm short by Clevelander Bruce Checefsky that was based on a scenario published in 1924 by Hungarian Dadaist György Gerö. Lots of faces and floating objects in that one. It's definitely fun to see my own work screen with other Ohio-made films but more importantly, to be reminded of what an independent filmmaker can accomplish here.
