Let there be no confusion: Cindy Sherman is not a selfie artist. In fact, as she told W Magazine for a cover feature in its recent Art Issue, "I actually hate the idea of selfies.” Nonetheless, the artist's choice to be her own model in depicting feminine archetypes over four decades has resulted in a modern-day association between her work and the reigning form of social media portraiture.

Thinking about this, we got curious about how you might use your own image as a form of creative expression. We know our followers can bring more to a photographed self-portrait than a fish face and a carefully placed hand—especially those who've seen and been inspired by the talent and commitment on view at the Wex in the career retrospective Cindy Sherman: Imitation of Life. So show us what you can do, and in return, we'll give you a chance to win a year's membership to the Wex or a $50 gift card to the Wexner Center Store. Everything you need to know is below!

Self-Portrait Contest images

The details: Create a photo-based self-portrait and share it on Instagram. Tag the post with @wexarts and #imitationoflife to make it an official contest entry.

The judges: A panel of local creatives including photographer-filmmaker Danielle Petrosa, Wex Senior Graphic Designer Brandon Ballog and Social Media Coordinator Sydney Cologie.

The prize: Your choice of a year's "Friend" membership to the Wex or a $50 gift card to the Wexner Center Store.

The last chance to enter: Deadline for entries is 11:59 PM on Friday, December 22.

The winner will be announced on Instagram and here on the Wex blog on Wednesday, January 10. Good luck!

The rules: Valid through December 22, 2017. No purchase necessary. Entrants must be 16 years of age or older. Entries must be works created on or after October 1, 2017. Limit 3 entries per person. Employees of the Wexner Center for the Arts and their families are not eligible. The Wexner Center reserves the right to share images of entries in marketing materials, including website and social media channels.
