Sandman, Coraline Artist P. Craig Russell Introduces Film

Comic book artist P. Craig Russell might be most familiar to younger readers for this graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Coraline – the source material for the recent hit 3D animated film.

But more knowledgeable comic fans know Russell for his incredibly rich and diverse body of work turned out over the past 35 years.  While he has left his own indelible stamp on familiar characters such as Dr. Strange, Killraven, Sandman, Conan, and Batman he has received his greatest acclaim for fantastic adaptations of more classic fare including Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Wagner’s The Ring of the Nibelung, and Oscar Wilde’s fairy tales to name just a handful.

Residing in Kent, Russell is one of a surprisingly large number of distinguished comic book and strip artists that hail from the Buckeye state including Winsor McCay, Milton Caniff, Paul Pope, and Jeff Smith to name only a few.

If it seems like the Wexner Center has been hosting a lot of cartoon-related events over the past year it is because of our proximity to the world’s largest repository of original comic art – OSU’s Cartoon Library and Museum.  It has been a partnership that has been beneficial to both institutions and we look forward to even more collaborations as they prepare to move to their new digs in a couple of years.

Join us on Tuesday, May 12 as Craig will hold a book signing from 6 – 7pm in the Wexner Store and then introduce a screening of Night Music: The Art of P. Craig Russell along with the film’s director Wayne Alan Harold.
