(Federico Fellini, 1963)

101 Films You Need to See Before Graduation

35MM Print

A black-and-white image of a man peeking over his sunglasses and looking slightly off-screen.

Beloved by filmmakers to this day, 8 1/2 is a tour-de-force look at filmmaking.

Fellini’s feverish masterpiece stars Marcello Mastroianni as Guido, a famous Italian director grappling with self-doubt and marital difficulties while trying to get his science fiction epic off the ground. Referencing the number of films he had made by that point in his career, 8 1/2 dissects the difficulties of the creative process, complete with surreal and erotic dream sequences. The film followed Fellini’s successful La dolce vita (1960) and won Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design. In Italian with English subtitles. (138 mins., 35mm)
