Amsterdam Global Village

Johan van der Keuken, 1996

One of the most stunning "city symphony" films ever produced, Amsterdam Global Village records van der Keuken's encounters with Amsterdammers from all parts of the globe who've come there as refugees, migrants, and guest workers. Van der Keuken's Amsterdam Global Village is structured around the figure of Khalid, a young Moroccan moped courier whose assignments take him to all parts of the city. At once epic and intimate, the film questions how to preserve native tradition in a foreign climate and clarifies how local incidents are often expressions of global phenomena. It presents the human comedy as van der Keuken imagined it. (228 mins.)
