And with Him Came the West

(Mike Plante, 2019)

Still from And with Him Came the West

A secondary lawman at the storied shootout, Wyatt Earp survived the 1881 Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (which lasted only 30 seconds) and went on to be a saloon owner, miner, and referee. But Earp found a way to turn those 30 seconds into myth by hanging out in Hollywood in the 1920s trying to get a movie made about his life. And it worked! An entrancing essay film that connects Earp’s legend to the birth of the movies, And with Him Came the West (cowritten by past Artist Residency Award recipient Sam Green) delivers a rare mix of research and atmosphere in a fascinating, informative viewing experience. (76 mins., DCP)
