The Animal Kingdom

(Le règne animal, Thomas Cailley, 2023)

A dark-haired, bearded man with a furrowed brow crouches with his arm around a dark-haired teenager. Both look up to the right with concern.

Celebrate Francophone Day with a free screening of this thrilling sci-fi fantasy.

Viewers of The Animal Kingdom are dropped into a coming-of-age story set in a world hit by an outbreak of mutations gradually transforming some humans into animals. It follows François as he does everything he can to save his wife, who is affected by this mysterious condition. As some of the creatures disappear into a nearby forest, he embarks with Émile, their 16-year-old son, on a quest that will change their lives forever.

The film, which premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, draws parallels with our societal and individual responses to recent epidemics, as well as issues like identity, tolerance, and difference. It was nominated for 12 César awards (the highest film award in France) and won 5, including Best Cinematography. In French with English subtitles. (128 mins., DCP)

This screening is part of the annual Francophone Day Celebration organized by Ohio State’s Department of French and Italian. Guest speaker Associate Professor Maggie Flinn will introduce the film and lead a postscreening conversation. You can find more information on the Francophone Day event page.

"An off-kilter mystery that teasingly flirts with a larger metaphoric resonance."
