Anselm

(Wim Wenders, 2023)

Columbus Premiere

A person stands facing mountains at sunset, next to a large statue of angel wings on a platform with a snake spiraling up the pole underneath it.

A visually stunning portrait of a monumental artist by a truly great filmmaker makes Anselm a can’t-miss cinematic event.

Academy Award–nominated director Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire, Paris Texas, Pina, and Buena Vista Social Club) creates a mesmerizing portrait of Anselm Kiefer, one of the most innovative and influential painters and sculptors of our time. Shot in 3D, the immersive film captures the textural qualities of Kiefer’s large-scale works in a breathtaking cinematic experience. For over two years, Wenders traced Kiefer’s path from his native Germany to his current home in France, connecting the stages of his life to the essential places of his career. With his trademark visual acumen, Wenders captures Kiefer’s work—which explores culture and myth, specifically confronting the unpleasant history of his homeland—using ultra-high-resolution cameras to create groundbreaking 3D images. This is truly meant to be seen in theaters. (93 mins., 3D DCP)

Anselm premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and in the US at the Telluride Film Festival in August.
