ASCO: Without Permission

Between 1972 and 1987 four artists—Harry Gamboa, Jr., Glugio “Gronk” Nicandro, Willie Herrón, and Patssi Valdez—and an ever-changing cast of collaborators joined together to form a group that questioned the boundaries of art making. They called themselves ASCO (Spanish for nausea), and together they brought new attention to Chicano art and artists in Los Angeles and beyond. Executive produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, the film serves as a great introduction to the group’s work, history, and impact on the art world. (92 mins., DCP)

A discussion led by Carlos Rivas, Ohio State assistant professor of history of art and ethnic studies, and Herbert de Paz, visiting artist with the Center for Latin American Studies, follows the film.
