Set in an unspecified near future, the dystopian sci-fi western Bacurau follows Teresa (Bárbara Colen), a young woman who returns to her rural hometown in Brazil for her mother's funeral. Once home, she realizes her village is in dire straits and lacking basic amenities. But it’s worse than that. The government has removed the town from all maps, and its citizens are being sold as prey to a foreign safari company (whose leader is played by cult legend Udo Kier!). This incendiary parable about the exploitation of Brazil’s most vulnerable people by its government, corporations, and foreign interests is the latest feature by Kleber Mendonça Filho, who has visited the Wex twice in the past with his films Neighboring Sounds (2013) and Aquarius (2016). Also with Sônia Braga and a memorable, John Carpenter–inspired soundtrack. (132 mins., DCP)
