Join the Center for Latin American Studies for this screening of Bacurau as part of the 2025 Latin American Film Festival.
Set in an unspecified near future, the dystopian sci-fi western Bacurau follows Teresa (Bárbara Colen), a young woman who returns to her rural hometown in Brazil for her mother's funeral. Once home, she realizes her village is in dire straits and lacks basic amenities. Teresa soon learns that the government has removed the town from all maps, and its citizens are being sold as prey to a foreign safari company (whose leader is played by cult legend Udo Kier). Bacurau is an incendiary parable about the exploitation of Brazil’s most vulnerable people by its government, corporations, and foreign interests. Also with Sônia Braga and a memorable, John Carpenter–inspired soundtrack. Kleber Mendonça Filho has visited the Wex twice in the past with his films Neighboring Sounds (2013) and Aquarius (2016). (132 mins., DCP)
A discussion moderated by Vitor Vilaverde follows the screening. Vilaverde is a creative artist and filmmaker working through the intersections of transdisciplinary research. He received his PhD from Ohio State's Department of Spanish and Portuguese in 2024.
