Discover the silenced stories of the transatlantic slave trade and its lasting impact on the francophone Afro-Caribbean world with this powerful documentary.
Choeurs Atlantiques takes viewers on a journey through the living legacy of the Black diaspora and its resilience. The film brings attention to a long-overlooked story in the French Caribbean: a sunken slave ship and the struggle of the people aboard, who fought for their freedom. Known as Maroons, they, along with their descendants, formed free, independent settlements. Choeurs Atlantiques looks at the enduring imprint of colonialism; the gaps in official history; and the ways Afro-descendant communities preserve, reshape, and reclaim this memory across generations—offering new visions of justice and hope.
This deeply personal search for remembrance begins in Le Diamant, Martinique, and extends across three continents. Following Martinican artist Laurent Valère and his conversations with the global Black diaspora, the film explores what it means to be Black today in a connected world. (119 mins., DCP)
