Winner of the Best Actress award at Cannes, Maggie Cheung gives a startlingly raw performance in Clean as a drug-addled, would-be musician hoping to regain custody of her son. After her washed-up rock star husband dies of an overdose, Cheung's character moves from jail to methadone, leaving Canada for Paris in search of a new start. Director Assayas wrote the part with Cheung (his ex-wife) in mind, and she's joined by a stellar cast that includes Nick Nolte (as her father-in-law raising her son), Beatrice Dalle, Jeanne Balibar, and Don McKellar. Featuring appearances by musicians Tricky, Elizabeth Densmore, David Roback (Mazzy Star), and Emily Haines (Metric), and a soundtrack showcasing the music of Brian Eno. (35mm, 110 mins.)
