Coeur fidèle

(The Faithful Heart, Jean Epstein, 1923)
With live music by Alloy Orchestra

Woman's portrait

The renowned Alloy Orchestra—whom Roger Ebert called “the best in the world at accompanying silent film”—returns to provide its signature musical accompaniment to this recent restoration of Jean Epstein’s Coeur fidèle. The formal tour de force transforms a tragic love story into a visual feast set against the bars, docks, and amusements of old Marseille. An influential critic and theorist, Epstein was also one of France’s most important early filmmakers, best known today for his 1928 adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher.
