Coffy

(Jack Hill, 1973)

Pam Grier stands in front of trees and holds a shotgun pointed directly at the camera

Grier’s turn as a nurse who rains vengeance on violent mobsters and criminals was just the start of an action career spanning decades.

The poster for this star-making vehicle proclaimed Pam Grier as “the ‘Godmother’ of them all…The baddest One-Chick Hit-Squad that ever hit town!” Her third film with director Jack Hill, Coffy established Grier as the first female onscreen action hero of the 1970s. Starring in the title role, she plays a nurse-turned-vigilante who exacts brutal retaliation on the pimps, dealers, and mob bosses she blames for her sister’s drug addiction. (91 mins., DCP)
