Among the greatest documentarians of our time, Patricio Guzmán has spent the past decade creating a trilogy of films (including Nostalgia for the Light and The Pearl Button) that investigates the relationship between historical memory, political trauma, and geography in his native Chile. By poetically connecting the grandeur and indifference of nature with the decades of horrors that Chileans have experienced, the conclusion of the trilogy—The Cordillera of Dreams—encompasses both the peaks of the Andes and the protests on Chilean streets from the Pinochet dictatorship to the present. (85 mins., DCP)
The documentary is preceded by Cleveland filmmaker Bruce Checefsky’s Doctor Hypnison, an experimental short inspired by a story by Serbian poet Salmon Monny de Boully. (12 mins., DCP).
