Zwigoff’s documentary portrait Crumb looks at the revered (and reviled, in some quarters) underground cartoonist Robert Crumb, known for his unmistakable visual style and his sexually provocative and racially charged work. Crumb was a pivotal figure in the 1960s underground comics movement and perhaps the first cartoonist of his generation to be hailed by the mainstream art world. (120 mins., 35mm) Fueled by his love of 1920s American music, Zwigoff created his first film, Louie Bluie: a chronicle of country-blues string musician Howard Armstrong, his contemporaries, and the often ribald tales that marked grassroots music in the first part of the 20th century. (60 mins., video)
