Romanian director Radu Jude blends the absurd and the incisive to create a truly singular film experience that captures today’s unrelenting, utterly maddening world of work.
In the indescribable Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, Angela is an overworked and underpaid production assistant. Assigned to help cast a safety equipment video, she drives around Bucharest auditioning people who suffered workplace injuries. Meanwhile, she’s making spontaneous TikTok videos as her alter ego “Bobita,” a face-filtered, trash-talking, right-wing Andrew Tate-esque figure with a large following. Bucharest’s past is incorporated to this swirl of storylines via footage from the 1981 feminist documentary Angela Moves On, which follows a female cabbie driving the same streets as the film’s protagonist. Featuring memorable cameos by “the world’s worst director” Uwe Boll and the great German actress Nina Hoss (Tár, Phoenix), the film received the Special Jury Prize at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival. In Romanian, German, Hungarian, Italian, and English with English subtitles. (163 mins., DCP)
