Father and Son Mother and Son

Double Feature Alexander Sokurov

wex grid image fill

Two films from a planned trilogy on family themes by Alexander Sokurov, director of Russian Ark.

Second feature start time: 8:40 pm Extreme lyricism joins extreme physicality in Father and Son, the middle installment of the trilogy. It depicts an almost-grown boy's dependence on his handsome, widowed father. Their relationship is played out in a stylized dreamscape evoking Lisbon as much as St. Petersburg. (2003, 90 mins.)

Mother and Son, the first film in the trilogy, focuses on a dying woman who is lovingly attended to by her grown son away from the world in their country home. Both films are landmarks of visual beauty and invention, calling to mind such masters of light as Vermeer and Caspar David Friedrich. (1997, 73 mins.)
