Collective memory burns bright red in this latest revolutionary film by Kamal Aljafari.
A Fidai Film is the most recent work by Palestinian filmmaker Kamal Aljafari (The Roof, Port of Memory). Through an inventive and haunting manipulation of archival footage, Aljafari’s poetic and political film asks its audience to consider the lives of images and what can and cannot be saved from their intentional erasure. Join Cinéseries for this screening and stick around after for an informal conversation in the café outside the theater. In Arabic, English, and Hebrew with English subtitles. (80 mins., DCP)

Kamal Aljafari is a filmmaker and artist born in Ramla in 1972. His work is largely affiliated with the world of documentary, although he employs a variety of different procedures and formats that position the visual arts in dialogue with essay films and experimental cinema. One of the hallmarks of his process lies in the manipulation of images in an attempt to extrapolate their figurative nature, as with his treatment of domestic surveillance footage. Aljafari received an MFA from Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2003. A full retrospective of his work to date was held at IndieLisboa in 2024. Aljafari has taught at The New School in New York and the German Film and Television Academy Berlin. He has received a fellowship from the Film Study Center and Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University and is currently a fellow at the Institute for Ideas and Imagination, Columbia University (2024–25). He lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
