The Films of Morgan Fisher

Tonight's program features a fine selection of playful, self-referential works by minimalist filmmaker Morgan Fisher. The screening includes Fisher's latest film (), a sensation everywhere from the Rotterdam Film Festival to the Whitney Biennial. The playful, self-referential, and minimalist films of Morgan Fisher celebrate the practices and materials that most filmmakers strive to make invisible. His unique position as a former editor in the commercial film industry and as an avant-garde filmmaker allows him to boldly examine the processes that govern both worlds.

Fisher's early works Production Stills (1970) and Cue Rolls (1974) are radical documentaries of their own making, while Projection Instructions (1976) makes the usually unnoticed projectionist the star of the show as he "performs" the film like a score. The innovative and acclaimed Standard Gauge (1984) is simultaneously an autobiography of Fisher and a history of the commercial film industry. His latest film, ( ) (2003), is an assemblage of unheralded insert shots from various B movies. (Program approx. 77 mins.)
