Gerhard Richter Painting

Corinna Belz, 2011

Gerhard Richter, one of the world’s greatest living painters and the 1998 Wexner Prize recipient, allowed his studio and working process to be filmed for the first time in decades for this feature.

Blunt, provocative, and unashamedly curmudgeonly and iconoclastic, the media-shy artist provides acerbic comments about his work as he creates a new series of large abstract paintings in front of the camera. In addition to the perceptive and fascinating footage of Richter in his studio, Gerhard Richter Painting provides a sense of his creative development through archival interviews from the 1960s and 1970s and a conversation with his American gallerist, Marian Goodman, about the 1984 show that began their relationship.
