Kick off a summer of free Wex Drive-In concert films with one of the greatest American documentaries ever made. Gimme Shelter follows the Rolling Stones on their 1969 tour that culminated in the infamous Altamont Free Concert, where a crowd member was murdered (on film) by a member of the Hells Angels. The concert-doc classic is filled with Stones hits and many now-famous moments, including footage of their show at Madison Square Garden, the band recording “Wild Horses” and “Brown Sugar” in Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, and the behind-the-scenes deal that led to the Altamont show. (91 mins., 35mm)
All Wex Drive-In movies start at dusk (generally around 9 PM), but you’re invited to come at 8 PM to choose your spot. Pack up a few blankets or lawn chairs, and get ready to enjoy pizza from Mikey’s Late Night Slice, food bowl from Hai Poke food truck, beer from Seventh Son Brewing, and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Members, visit the Wex membership table for your free scoop and other perks. All films are screened in 35mm!
