A time capsule of New York City in the early 1990s and its collision of queer, feminist, and punk cultures, Bad Grrrls is an episode of the Manhattan Cable Television series Glennda and Friends, a public access talk show that combined humor and politics to educate viewers about queer issues, AIDS, and activism. In this episode, hosts Glennda Orgasm and Fonda LaBruce attend a Riot Grrrl conference and interview punk women, performers, and artists including Sadie Benning, Penny Arcade, Delta Dawn, and Maul Girls while capturing a range of perspectives on feminism, punk, and underground activism. The episode also explores drag’s relationship with feminism and how to reconcile the problems of punk with the Riot Grrrl movement’s desire for women’s liberation. (video, 29 mins.)
This screening is held in conjunction with the series After Stonewall: Queer Films Made at the Wex. See the complete lineup.
