A can't-miss evening for fans of classic French films! Tonight's program begins with an acclaimed new documentary about Henri Langlois, founder of the Cinematheque Française, then continues with a magnificently restored print of Robert Bresson's Pickpocket.

The honorable efforts of Henri Langlois to preserve and exhibit the world's cinematic masterpieces are celebrated in Jacques Richard's inspiring new documentary Henri Langlois: Phantom of the Cinematheque. After establishing the Cinematheque Francaise, Langlois realized immediately the importance of saving our film heritage for future generations (even during the Nazi occupation of Paris). His ongoing presentations at the Cinematheque inspired countless filmmakers, especially the nouvelle vague generation that included directors François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Claude Chabrol. Langlois' attempted dismissal by the Ministry of Culture is often cited as an event precipitating the May 1968 demonstrations in Paris. (video, 128 mins.)
