In the wake of Chantal Akerman’s unexpected death last fall, film lovers around the globe commiserated about the loss of one of cinema’s most extraordinary artists. Best known for her masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) and her uncompromisingly formal and feminist approach to filmmaking, Akerman produced a distinctive body of work that has intrigued and confounded audiences around the globe. This documentary by Akerman’s longtime colleague portrays the artist as a nomad in search of an emotional home that always eluded her. The film focuses on Akerman’s aimlessness after the death of her mother, a relationship explored at length in No Home Movie, Akerman’s final film, which screens as part of this series.
