A moving, personal portrait of iconic writer and activist James Baldwin as he revisits the Civil Rights struggle of the 1950s and 60s.
Rereleased in conjunction with the James Baldwin centennial, I Heard it Through the Grapevine follows Baldwin’s return to the South, where he visits important sites of the Civil Rights Movement and meets with key figures, including Ralph Abernathy and Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. As he travels from Selma to Atlanta to Birmingham (and to Newark to meet with writer and activist Amiri Baraka) he considers the promises of the movement and the fallacy of progress in its wake. (92 mins., 4K DCP)
