Patagonia, 1882. Captain Gunnar Dinesen (Viggo Mortensen) has come from Denmark with his 15-year-old daughter to take an engineering job with the Argentine army. His daughter falls in love with a young solider, and they run away together one night, forcing Dinesen to venture into enemy territory to find the young couple. Jauja is the story of a man’s desperate search for his daughter, a solitary quest that takes him to a place beyond civilization, and perhaps beyond time itself. A moving drama set against breathtaking landscapes reminiscent of John Ford’s classic films, Jauja finds Lisandro Alonso—one of Argentina’s most influential directors—presenting his most ambitious film to date. (108 mins., DCP)
