We are very grateful for the generous support of patrons with the means to chip in a bit more in these precarious times.
After the fallout of Hurricane Maria and an economic crisis, Landfall follows Puerto Ricans preparing to weather another threat of global significance: disaster capitalism.
Set against the backdrop of protests that toppled the US colony’s governor in 2019, Landfall shares kaleidoscopic glimpses of collective trauma and resistance. The documentary captures everyday Puerto Ricans—including subsistence farmers, teachers, and activists—as they face an incoming wave of cryptocurrency traders, luxury real estate developers, and politicians, all trying to leverage the crisis in order to advance their exploitative business ventures.
Exciting young filmmaker Cecilia Aldarondo examines the kinship of these two storms—one environmental, the other economic—juxtaposing competing utopian visions of community and recolonization. (One future envisions workable electricity finally being available to all citizens while another promises “renewable energy beach mixers” for cryptocurrency employees). The new Puerto Rico poses a question of global urgency: when the world falls apart, what does a just recovery look like? (91 mins., digital video)
This presentation also includes a conversation between filmmaker Cecilia Aldarondo and filmmaker, writer, activist, and musician Astra Taylor.
