A Laying on of Hands

Presented in collaboration with Cinéseries

A young Black girl stretches her hand to shield an outpour of light. It casts a shadow against her face.

Programmed by Columbus-based filmmaker and writer Claudia Owusu, this month’s Cinéseries program gathers an intimate collection of short films meditating on Black girlhood.

Taken from Ntozake Shange’s poem of the same title, A Laying on of Hands brings together independent shorts that tease the introversions of Black girlhood, contemplating the seeded laments that pulse through the dreams, spirituality, and lineage of Black girls. A Laying on of Hands invites viewers to examine the heft of the stories we inherit and their effects on how we negotiate our place in the world. (program approx. 71 mins., DCP)

About Cinéseries

In the words of Cinéseries’ members: Cinéseries is a student-led group that organizes monthly screenings in collaboration with the Wexner Center for the Arts. We aim to offer a space for students and the community to engage with film and expanded cinema from makers of a variety of backgrounds. We aspire to create an environment conducive to critical engagement by inviting filmmakers to showcase work that takes risks, challenges norms, and opens a conversation by devoting to a wide range of artist-centered and independent media.
