The evening begins with this year's Camera d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Leap Year. Stay for The Ship of Monsters, a comical tale of female aliens from Venus hunting men. Leap Year is one of the most bracing and unsettling debuts in recent years. This startling character study tracks the daily life of a lonely woman, a freelance journalist who has just moved to Mexico City from rural Oaxaca. It is set entirely in the woman’s small apartment, where she brings recreational lovers for sexual encounters that grow increasingly extreme, violent, and troubling as February 29, a date mysteriously circled on her calendar, approaches. Newcomer Monica Del Carmen delivers a fearless and hauntingly real performance as the journalist. (92 mins., 35mm) After the last man on Venus dies, two voluptuous Venusian women, Beta and Gamma, set out on an intergalactic mission to collect men from around the cosmos. After collecting an assortment of bizarre, monstrous space men, the women's ship crashes in Chihuahua, Mexico. Once in Mexico, the women develop differing goals—Beta is captivated by a local singing cowboy, while Gamma is set on conquering Earth using her captured space aliens as soldiers. The Ship of Monsters has it all—surreal rubber-suited monsters galore, blood-sucking space beauties in swim suits, and a robot in love with a jukebox. Print provided by Filmoteca de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (81 mins., 35mm) The Ship of Monsters begins at 8:45 PM. Note: No one 17 and under admitted to Leap Year. Cosponsored by Ohio State's Department of Spanish and Portuguese and Center for Latin American Studies.
