This double feature showcases Malle's worldliness and feel for complex characters, pairing Les Amants, a frankly erotic drama starring Jeanne Moreau, with Le feu follet, about a recovering alcoholic's last days.

Second feature start time: 8:40 pm. Jeanne Moreau shot to international stardom in Malle's second feature, Les amants, about a women who leaves her husband for a younger man. The film would later become the centerpiece of the celebrated 1964 legal case of Jacobellis v. Ohio, in which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Cleveland Heights theater owner that the film was not "obscene" and therefore constitutionally protected. (88 mins.)

Tonight's second feature is Malle's Le feu follet. A delicately yet deeply resonant study scored to Satie, the film follows a man's last days as he attempts to reconnect to his old life after being treated for alcoholism. Adapted from the novel by Pierre Drieu La Rochelle (107 mins.)

Series organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in collaboration with Nouvelles Editions de Films S.L., Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection, with the support of French Cultural Services. Special thanks to Manuel Malle, Michael Barker, and Marie Bonnel.
