Light Years Away

(Les années lumière, Alain Tanner, 1981)

Man holding pig

Winner of a Special Jury Grand Prize at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival, the Dublin-set Light Years Away stars Mick Ford as Jonas, a young man who abandons urban life for the country. There he begins an apprenticeship with a reclusive old man (played by Trevor Howard) who possesses a closely guarded secret. One of Tanner’s rare English-language projects, the film is based on Daniel Odier’s 1974 novel La voie sauvage. (105 mins., 35mm)
