Magic Mike XXL

(Gregory Jacobs, 2015)

Introduced by Chris Feil, This Had Oscar Buzz cohost

A group of six shirtless, muscular men in jeans stride confidently towards the camera as groups of women cheer and wave money in the background.

The Magic Mike sequel is a joyful ode to true male comradery, female pleasure, and the erotics of Ginuwine’s “Pony.”

It’s raining men at the Wexner Center, hallelujah! In this riotously delightful sequel to Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike, Channing Tatum’s Mike Lane has retired from stripping to run his own custom furniture business. After reuniting with his affable troupe of male stripper pals, the Kings of Tampa, they decide to end their careers on a high note at a stripping convention in Miami Beach.

Combining all the best aspects of the buddy comedy, road movie, and dance film, the movie then transcends them all and reveals itself as a hangout movie about a group of men who support each other, care for each other’s feelings, and center their activities around providing pleasure to women. With Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash, Gabriel Iglesias, Jada Pinkett Smith, Donald Glover, and Andie MacDowell. (115 mins., DCP)
