A landmark of British cinema and a high point among the famed comedies produced by Ealing Studios in the late 1940s and 1950s.
The Man in the White Suit features a delightful performance by Alec Guinness (who previously stared in the Ealing comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets) as a down-on-his-luck chemistry whiz who, in his spare time, develops a fabric that never wears out and never gets dirty. This, of course, raises the interest of many outside parties, who then set our hero on the run. Directed by the underrated Alexander Mackendrick (Sweet Smell of Success), the film is a true classic of satirical comedy. (85 mins., DCP)
