Get a behind-the-scenes look at how digital movie characters are created at the legendary special effects company Industrial Light & Magic.
Hogwarts. Rocket Raccoon. Jurassic Park. Gollum. Wakanda. Filmmakers and special effects artists have used computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create some of the most memorable characters and settings in film history. The continual evolution and advancement of this technology has created a toolbox for movie makers that allows them to tell stories that would have been almost unthinkable just a generation or two ago. Join us as Columbus resident and Oscar winner Matt Derksen, head of rigging for Industrial Light & Magic, discusses his work creating characters for Hulk (2003), Game of Thrones (2011–19), The Hunger Games (2012), Life of Pi (2012), and more. A rigger designs the digital skeletons for a CGI character to allow for animation to be layered over it. Derksen will show examples of his work and participate in a Q&A with the audience following the presentation. An Ohio State alum, Derksen graduated from the Department of Art with an MFA in Art and Technology. (program approx. 60 mins.)
Please note: The Hunger Games is no longer screening as planned.
