This program collects works from three intriguing multimedia artists.
This installment of Videotheque programs features work by Portland-based performance artist and filmmaker Miranda July, who performed her piece Swan Tool here last year; Croatian-born and Amsterdam-based Sandra Sterle, a participant in an ArtsLink residency here in 2000; and California-based Rita Gonzalez, who shows The Assumption of Lupe Velez.
Special thanks to Video Data Bank for their help in this compilation.
Miranda July The Amateurist, 1998 A "professional," middle-aged woman monitors a younger sulking and scantily-clad "amateur" woman (both played by July) via video surveillance. (14 mins.)
Atlanta, 1996 A 12 year-old Olympic swimmer and her mother (both played by July) speak to the public about "going for the gold." (10 mins.)
Sandra Sterle True Stories, 1998 A series of four vignettes based on taking a walk though four different places--each with its own specific energy and evoking different memories. (14:16 mins.)
No Sleep, 1999 A response to Sterle's experience of American culture, edited at the Wexner Center as a part of her Artslink residency in November 1999. Sterle has made previous works involving a look-a-like doll that lives a fictitious, parallel life. (11 mins.)
Rita Gonzalez The Assumption of Lupe Velez, 1999 An investigation of the myth of celebrated silent film star Lupe Velez nicknamed "The Mexican Spitfire") that meditates on issues of gender and ethnic identity and combines an obsession with celebrity with an obsession with death as it circulates around the few known facts of Velez's tragic suicide. (22 mins.)
Support for the 2002-03 film/video season provided by the Rohauer Collection Foundation and the Corporate Annual Fund of the Wexner Center Foundation. International films, documentaries, and visiting filmmaker presentations presented with support from the Ohio Arts Council.
