My Dinner with Andre

God's Country

Tonight's screening pairs the well-known My Dinner with Andre, a rambling dinner-table conversation between Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn, with one of Malle's least-seen works, God's Country, a portrait of a rural community outside of Minneapolis.

Second feature start time: 9 pm. Written by and starring Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory, My Dinner with Andre brilliantly transforms the spectacle of two people sitting and talking into one of the best defenses ever made of the lost art of conversation. (111 mins.)

The second film of tonight's program is one of Malle's least-seen works. In God's Country, a PBS-commissioned portrait of a rural community an hour west of Minneapolis, Malle delivers a sensitive, nuanced look at a way of life imperiled by family farm foreclosures and the evaporation of traditional ways of making a living. (95 mins.)

Series organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in collaboration with Nouvelles Editions de Films S.L., Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection, with the support of French Cultural Services. Special thanks to Manuel Malle, Michael Barker, and Marie Bonnel.
