Nadja

(Michael Almereyda, 1994)

Presented in collaboration with Cinéseries

New Restoration

A woman wearing a headband and makeup looks down a jukebox can be seen behind her.

A young vampire in New York City seeks to avenge her father in this cult classic produced by David Lynch.

Programmed by Cinéseries Vice President Sofia Mastorakis, Nadja is a retelling of the classic Universal Monster vampire tale, combining elements of Dracula's Daughter (Lambert Hillyer, 1936) and the 1928 novel Nadja by André Breton. Set in the 1990s in New York, the film centers on Nadja following the death of her father, Dracula. In the process of reconnecting with her sickly brother, she develops a fascination with a married woman whose family has connections to the Van Helsings. This new 4K restoration combines 35mm black-and-white film and distinctly pixelated digital footage from the PXL2000, a Fisher-Price toy camcorder produced in the 1980s that recorded video onto audio cassette tapes. David Lynch executive produced and guest stars in the film. An informal discussion about the film and light refreshments follows in Heirloom Café. (97 mins., DCP)

About the series

In the words of Cinéseries’ members: Cinéseries is a student-led group that organizes monthly screenings in collaboration with the Wexner Center for the Arts. We aim to offer a space for students and the community to engage with film and expanded cinema from makers of a variety of backgrounds. We aspire to create an environment conducive to critical engagement by inviting filmmakers to showcase work that takes risks, challenges norms, and opens a conversation by devoting to a wide range of artist-centered and independent media.
