Tenzin Phuntsog gorgeously weaves together the poetry and bureaucracy of exile and death in his debut fiction film Next Life.
Next Life centers on a Tibetan family living in exile in an American suburb. The father has a pain in his heart that Western doctors cannot explain. When a Tibetan doctor listens to the rush of blood in the father’s veins and concludes that it’s nearly time for the father to leave this life, the son begins the arduous process of trying to obtain a visa for his father to return to Tibet. Fully embracing the Tibetan concept of Tse Chema (reincarnation), Next Life is a powerful reminder of the spiritual possibilities of cinema. Executive produced by Carlos Reygadas (Silent Light). In English and Tibetan with English subtitles. (73 mins., DCP)
Tenzin Phuntsog will join us virtually after the screening for a Q&A.

Tenzin Phuntsog is an award-winning artist and filmmaker working across moving image, narrative film, and installation. Centered in a Tibetan diasporic gaze, his practice explores themes of landscape, presence, and belonging. Critics recognize his work for its innovative use of 35mm, in which he lenses his own projects with a singular sensibility. Throughout his body of work, his interest in technology and its capacity to transform perception—mediating the quotidian and sublime, as well as distance and time—remains evident. He founded and directs the Tibet Film Archive, a collection of rare and historical films shot inside Tibet before the occupation and through the early exile years. Phuntsog earned his MFA in visual art from Columbia University and his BFA in media art from University of California, Los Angeles.
