One-Armed Swordsman Vengeance!

Zhang Che

wex grid image fill

Two films that arguably set the stage for the contemporary kung-fu film, moving the genre from high-flying heroic virtue to hard-boiled bloody revenge. Both are by director (and John Woo mentor) Zhang Che. A key film in the transition from the traditional "chivalrous swordplay" film to the "lone hero" kung fu films of the 1970s, Zhang Che's One-Armed Swordsman follows the title character (played by Jimmy Wang Yu) as he seeks revenge on the enemies who cost him his arm. (1967; 111 mins.)

A bloody tale of tragedy and revenge, the director's Vengance! also helped create the template for the modern kung fu film. (1970; 103 mins.)
